Reflections in Romans 6:11-23

“In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.” Romans 6:11-14 NIV

In Christianity, we are dead to sin and are no longer stuck in it. We are made new and live holy lives for God because of Jesus Christ, and only because of Jesus. Don’t get caught up in the sinful things of life, so that they do not overtake you and ruin your new heart. We must be careful in this way. Don’t do sinful things. Don’t offer yourselves to sin, but offer yourself to God. Try to live upright, Godly lives. Be strong in your faith, and try to walk close to God, try to live righteously. Sin does not control us because we are not defeated by it, we are truly free.

“But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. You have been set free from sin and have becomes slaves to righteousness.” Romans 6:17-18 NIV

Thank God that we no longer belong to sin because we listened to what we were told about the Gospel. If we listen to God’s word- and through it have faith in Jesus so that he gives us a new heart- we become free in this world that’s completely drowned in constant sin. We are free in our hearts while others struggle. We are free through Christ. And instead of living dead lives like those that don’t belong to Christ, we live righteous and good lives that lead to eternal joy in heaven.

“I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness. When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:19-23 NIV

Offer your heart to be a slave to holiness. Let it get caught up in doing good things that please God, that give him glory. We are slaves to sin no longer. It was a monster that dominated and recked us and led to death, but now we ride on the wings of the Holy Spirit, thriving in freedom and a sense of eternal peace. When we look back to our sinful lives, we see that all we did did not help us. Everything was temporary and had no meaning. Things that have meaning are things that have eternal value. We thought those sinful things could make us happy, but they couldn’t for long. Now that we belong to God’s heart and live for him, we are rewarded and become more holy and more close to God. This holiness and close walk with God we have leads to eternal life in heaven, where we have truly unlimited riches. There, we have more than anything we could have ever dreamed of. Sin leads to death, only and always. It might seem fun for awhile, whatever the sin is, but does not bring eternal joy. Because God loves us so much more than we could ever possibly dream of knowing, he gives us eternal life, eternal joy, eternal hope, eternal peace, and eternal love in Jesus, the Lord.
